With homecoming celebrations underway, the 2025 Royal Scots have been announced. But what is a Royal Scot?

“The Royal Scots is a recent evolution of the old Homecoming Court and King and Queen system. The tradition of the Homecoming Court has been going on for at least 60 years and probably longer,” Brendan Murdie (‘22) said.

Murdie is Assistant Director of Student Engagement- Student Activities and Organizations here at Alma. He was also a member of the board that helped select the Royal Scots for this year.

“I wasn’t in charge of the process at that time, but the change was made to require applicants to submit materials for review. It also made the process more gender inclusive to better represent students at Alma,” Murdie said.

The Royal Scots for this year are Holly Hall (‘26), Dahvey Moody (‘26), Karri Hamilton (‘26) and Killian Glover (‘27).

“It’s a really huge honor. I think the fact that not only students but also faculty and staff also have a say in it is a really special thing because I think students can have an impact on faculty and staff as well as their fellow classmates,” Hall said.

Hall is a Leadership and Management and Sports Management double-major, plays on the tennis team and acts as Alma’s SAAC president and NCAA Division III representative, among many other positions on campus.

“In my college journey, faculty and staff have played such a huge role in what I’m involved in and the person I’ve become,” Hall said.

While going through the process to become a Royal Scot for this year, Hall was asked to submit an essay, which she shared with the Almanian for this article.

“From close friendships to connections with administrators, professors, and community members, I have been surrounded by a supportive and encouraging network. Alma’s tight-knit culture fosters an environment where I could truly thrive, not only as a student-athlete but as a young adult,” Hall wrote in her essay.

Moody is a nursing major, Vice President of the Black Student Union on campus, a KCP mentor, a defensive back for the football team and a LINKS mentor.

“I’m very appreciative and grateful for the recognition. To me, being a Royal Scot just shows that people see part of the impact and the piece of the big puzzle I am here at Alma,” Moody said.

Moody also shared his application essay to become a Royal Scot with the Almanian.

“Alma College has become more than a place of study; it has become a home. The communities I have joined have provided support, purpose, and belonging, while also challenging me to lead and give back in equal measure,” Moody wrote in his essay.

Hamilton is a nursing major and treasurer of the Student Nurses Association here at Alma.

“Looking back, a lot of the people that I have looked up to have been Royal Scots, so in a way being one now validates how I’ve worked so hard to be like them,” Hamilton said.

On top of her nursing program accomplishments, Hamilton is also a First-Year Guide and a Living Learning Community mentor.

“After all these years of working so hard to do things I’m passionate about, it almost feels like I’m being recognized for it. It’s rewarding to know that the people I’m passionate about and thankful for feel the same way back for me,” Hamilton said.

Glover, the youngest Royal Scot for this year, is also involved in many things on campus. A communications major, Glover participates in choir and accapela groups, plays on the Overwatch eSports team and is a tour guide at Alma.

“I was super excited to get the nomination but didn’t think I would make the top ten, let alone the top four and actually be a part of the court. It just feels like a really big honor and I’m very proud that the student body elected me,” Glover said.

Glover is also Vice President of Phi Mu Alpha, Alma’s music fraternity, as well as a sweetheart of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority.

“I really want to thank the people in my fraternity for pushing me to always be better and really challenge my viewpoints and decisions to push me to be a better leader. I also want to thank my family, because they pushed me to apply to be nominated in the first place,” Glover said.
