The Delta Gamma Tau (DGT) Fraternity introduced a new event this year: the Scare Games, which took place on Alma’s Chapel and Chapel Lawn on Nov. 1.

The Scare Games were modeled after a series of games portrayed in the Pixar movie Monster’s University which was the prequel to Monsters Inc., in which the different Monsters compete in a number of scaring based competitions to determine who are the best “scarers.” The series of games at Alma this year included obstacle courses, games and a talent show for final contestants.

“In our version of these games we will have teams go through four events, an inflatable obstacle course, a capture the flag style game, a scare challenge and lastly the top three teams will compete in a group talent show judged by brothers to determine the final placement,” said Harley Dowell (‘28), the DGT Philanthropy Chairperson.

The competitors were incentivized by prizes for the top teams, including a speaker system for first place and $100 and $50 Amazon gift cards for the second and third place teams respectively.

The first-place championship team included Hannah Gibbons (‘26), Addi Cooley (‘29), MaKayla Kozal (‘28), Victoria Del Corral (‘29), Alyssa Dickieson (‘27) and Maddie Hicks (‘29) who made up a team from the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority.

Overall, there were ten teams who participated in the event on Saturday evening, adding to the weekend of Halloween-themed festivities.

The Scare Games were one of the Philanthropic Events of the semester for DGT, meaning that each of the teams raised $35 to participate in the competitions, with all proceeds going to Footprints Ministries, a local non-profit that sends funds and resources to Sierra Leone with the goal of improving its medical care and providing job training for its citizens.

“I loved getting to support another Greek organization’s philanthropy while also getting to have fun with my sisters. The DGT brothers made the event very fun, and I am glad that I got to be a part of it,” said Jillian Comer (‘28).

Footprints is one of the many non-profit organizations that DGT supports as part of their philanthropic mission. This fall, DGT volunteered at Victory Day as another philanthropic event.

“Footprints Missions is an organization based right here in Alma and they help send students to Sierra Leone to help with humanitarian efforts. The money we raise will go towards sending the students over there and the expenses of the programs they run,” said Dowell.

“Since we are a local fraternity, we like to give back to the place that has shown us hospitality for over 80 years now. Overall, DGT regularly partners with non-profits like Hope House, Footprints, Day Dreams and His Place and we value all organizations equally,” said Dowell.

“My favorite part about the Scare Games was being able to support DGT’s philanthropy and have fun with other organizations on campus,” said Gibbons.

The fraternity plans to make the Scare Games an annual event due to its success and turnout.

“The Scare Games were fantastic. Seeing so many people from other organizations was amazing. It feels great being able to host a fun and creative event with the purpose of giving back to such an admirable local organization and charity like Footprints,” said Sam Leppien (‘26), the President of DGT.
