Story Time Scots, a play being produced by Alma College’s theatre department, is set to go on stage from March 27th through March 20th in the Strosacker Theatre.

Story Time Scots is a devised piece, meaning that Alma College’s theatre department wrote the script, characters, and plot collectively. This is one of the first times in Alma College’s history that it has completed this feat, and the work has paid off immensely.

“[Story Time Scots] is a work created in collaboration with the actors and the people writing it. The play is all written by students, besides our faculty members.” said Ruth Losey (‘27), Stage Manager.

“The most interesting part of working with a devised piece is definitely seeing it come together throughout all stages…It’s not like you have the whole script in front of you, so it’s interesting seeing the script come in parts.” said Aaron Scolero (‘27).

The show’s plot involves a group of Alma students taking a trip through Scotland. While exploring Scotland, the group learns about various Scottish fairy tales and folklore, such as Scottish dragons and selkies.

The full cast list consists of Hailey Elwarner (’25), Mia Minniti (’27), Simon Fransisco (’27), Amelia Windeler (’28), Regan Yates (’25), Atticus Mulder (’25), Jake Elsea, Aaron Scolaro (’27) and Addison Spear (’28).

Due to the small size of the cast, many students take on multiple roles, allowing them to showcase their versatility and contribute heavily to the overall success of the production.

“I have multiple roles in the show… Inner Child, Villager One, Big Gray Man, Hunter One, Hunter Two, and Knight Three,” said Scolero.

“My roles are Teacher’s Pet – I get to puppeteer a dragon – Peter Dentium, Bessey the Horse, and Tamlin.”  said Amelia Windeler (‘28).

Additionally, due to the individuality of this production, the Story Time Scots crew have had to overcome unique challenges and work together to smooth out the quirks that come with producing devised pieces.

“Since the script is all new to us, it was kind of difficult to figure out what my character was supposed to be like. As I’m reading the script, I’m designing the character in my head.” said Simon Fransisco (‘27).

“A challenge that’s unique in this production is trying to master Scottish accents. We want to be as accurate as possible in order to intrigue the crowd,” said Emerson Inzeo (‘27), assistant Stage Director.

Despite these challenges, the cast has put together a show that is definitely worth watching, demonstrating their dedication, teamwork, and passion for bringing the performance to life.

“People should come watch Story Time Scots because it’s fun! There’s spooky stories, fun scenic effects, and it’s overall super creative and intriguing. On top of that it’s also primarily student-made!” said Inzeo.

“Story Time Scots is very fun and creative, we’ve worked very hard and I think people would enjoy seeing the stories,” said Windeler.

For people hoping to learn more about the rich and historical aspects of Scottish folklore, Story Time Scots is the perfect entryway to learning about the deep-rooted culture that Scotland possesses.

“I’m so excited to see it… It will show everyone the theatre’s department’s take on Scottish heritage.” said Erica Johnson (‘27)

Admission to see Story Time Scots is free for Alma College students, faculty, and individuals 18 and under. Tickets are available for purchase through Alma College’s website, and the play will be taking place in Strosacker Theatre.
