The importance of holidays cannot be overestimated. For example, it is hard to imagine something more magical and cheerful than Christmas. No matter how old you are, five or forty-five, you will be excited by the upcoming Christmas holidays.
From my personal experience, people usually go into two categories: the first ones start to enter the festive mood as soon as the leaves fall off and the second ones wait till the very last moment to take the Christmas tree out of the basement.
Inspired by one of my friends making fun of another one for asking to put a Christmas song in the car on the seventh of November, I started thinking about who decides when the holiday season begins and ends.
My thoughts traveled back in time to when I was a young child, the holiday mood seemed to appear on its own and reached its peak on the holiday itself, when presents were received. I began to think about the fact that for the last few years before Christmas, I was mostly preoccupied with endless tasks.
Trying to find the reason for this drastic change, I decided to investigate what used to create the special atmosphere before the holiday. Things that came to mind were parents setting aside entire weekends to decorate the house, greeting me from school with Christmas baked goods, and secretly packing the presents that would tease me till the very celebration. Despite all the chores and worries, the adults always found time to create a holiday. As an adult myself, I did not continue the tradition, hoping that the Christmas spirit would appear on its own.
I always thought it was funny to see holiday decorations long before the holiday as if it was inappropriate and weird. I have realized that creating a festive mood is a difficult and lengthy process, especially when you are surrounded by deadlines and worries. What is the beauty of a holiday if you can only enjoy it for a couple of days, and not even fully, but in between various chores?
In this case, decorating the house, adding a holiday playlist, and making a list of themed movies and activities seems to be the right solution. Besides, nicely decorated houses and excitement before the upcoming holiday very often help people fight tiredness and go through the difficulties of everyday life.
A few other perks of decorating the house early for the holidays can be the still-not-overpriced decorations and the fun arguments with friends about when to decorate the house and how long to leave the decorations up for.
Judging by the mood of people on campus lately, sometimes life feels monotonous and hard. Holiday activities are a terrific way to distract yourself, spend time with loved ones, lift your spirits, and get back into the spirit of childhood. Now our holiday mood is only in our hands.
For those people who really do not have time until the very eve of the holiday, I want to say that leaving decorations up for a long time is also an option. It is hard to avoid the holiday spirit on the holiday itself, and decorations will help to keep it for a longer time. And then, a Christmas tree at the end of January will generate even more entertaining discussions than Christmas angels everywhere at the end of November.
For myself this year, I’ve decided to get to the decorations as early as possible. After all, why is it okay for Saga to put up a Christmas tree in early November but not for us?Â
