As the end of the Fall Term approaches on the Alma College campus, students are preparing to register for their winter classes and spring terms.

The registration period opens Monday, Oct. 27 for those with 90 or more credits; Wednesday, Oct. 30 students with 56 credits or more earned; Monday, Nov. 4 for those with 25 or more credits and Wednesday, Nov. 6 for anyone else who has not registered.

For new students, this process looks a little different than when they first registered for classes over the summer.

“They’re starting to select classes either for a potentially chosen major or seeking their requirements for their core curriculum,” said Mariah Orzolek, Registrar of Alma College.

However, registration might look a little different for juniors and seniors who are planning on doing internships in the coming semesters, on top of the course load they are already taking on at Alma.

“Sometimes they select a few classes and have a few pieces of the puzzle [internships] we build out that way,” said Orzolek.

Students will meet with their academic advisors prior to their registration period opening to discuss their course load and get the okay from their advisor. Advisors may also use this time to briefly check in on the students and their progress over the semester.

Winter registration has progressively moved to become earlier in the semester since Orzolek began her job as the registrar. She has been moving it to earlier to give students a chance to get into their fall semester, but not too far into the semester, which is why the registration period has fallen between Fall break and Thanksgiving break.

Although the nursing department has been facing its own changes, but registering for classes has remained easy and accessible for nursing students.

“Registering for winter semester has been very easy, even with the given changes for the Nursing Department. In the Nursing Department we were given an outline of what our four years should look like with all the classes names and spring terms it takes to complete this major. This has been a super helpful resource and has made register for classes so much easier,” said Kimberlin Mayhew (’27).

One major change is that students are now able to declare a Marketing major at college and view their progress toward completing this major. The Marketing major was outsourced to other colleges for some courses, but this old program is now being sunsetted by the college as everything is now being offered exclusively at Alma in the upcoming semesters.

With the introduction of this new major, Alma students who are interested in pursuing a Marketing degree can do so through the student portal.

On the contrary for some majors, classes are now being offered online. For example, Business majors have to take classes outsourced from other academic institutes instead of coming straight from Alma’s course catalog.

Students who want to change their major or declare it in the upcoming semester are encouraged to do so sooner rather than later, but some of the programs are intentionally designed to have another program pick up with it.

“Those are by design, so students can have multiple majors or minors,” said Orzolek

If you want to declare a major or minor, you must do so through the form’s portal on Inside Alma and class registration is open until January 6.
