As we approach Halloween on the Alma College campus, Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) executive committees have exciting plans for the students involved in the ever growing Greek life community, as well as those not currently in a FSL organization.
It is HalloGreek Week on campus and there are lots of events to go check out leading up to Halloween day on Oct. 31. From Monday, October. 28th to Friday, Nov. 1st, these events are open to all of campus and are a great way to get involved in the FSL that is offered on the Alma campus. It is a great opportunity to get to know the chapters and participate in events to put yourself in the Halloween mood.
“Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. HalloGreek Week is planned by and [run] by the National Panhellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council, but it is not just for FSL. It is for all Alma College students to enjoy,” said Neva Griffin (’27), Fraternity and Sorority Relations Chair.
“Monday will be a Halloween movie marathon out on the chapel lawn, Tuesday will be pumpkin painting and carving by the Gelston fire pit, Wednesday will be a more relaxed day with a skeleton head hunt where chapters will have all day to relax but will be able to win points if they go out and find their chapter’s designated skeleton head hidden around campus, Thursday will be a field day in the Rec and Friday will be the haunted houses!” said Griffin.
As mentioned, there is also a competition that will be taking place in honor of HalloGreek Week. The most involved fraternity and sorority will be able to win points based on their participation in events that are taking place around campus and the most involved win. The Fraternity and Sorority that win will win several awards for their chapter.
“Every year is a competition of which chapter has the best participation. The fraternity and sorority with highest participation gets a trophy and gets their chapter names engraved on a plaque by Hannah’s office. Neva and John have a point system and keep track of them throughout the week,” said Hannah Pietsch, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
The biggest event is the haunted houses that are being held by the Zeta Sigma fraternity and the Delta Gamma Tau fraternity. Most of the campus FSL community will be partnering to help work the haunted houses, making the experience special.
“I am most excited for the haunted houses at Zeta Sigma and Delta Gamma Tau on Friday November 1st. We will split up all the chapters between the two houses and half will work on setting up Zeta Sigma and the other half will work on Delta Gamma Tau. Then everyone on campus will be able to come by at 8 and enjoy walking through,” said Griffin.
Sigma Chi, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Xi Delta and Phi Mu Alpha can be found partnering with the Zeta Sigma family. Similarly, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Iota, Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Gamma Delta can be found partnering with the brothers of Delta Gamma Tau. Haunted houses will be open for participants to walk through at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 and they will conclude at 10 p.m. the same night.
“[Seeing as] we won Greek Week last year [the brothers of Delta Gamma Tau] are happy to have the chance to defend that title in [their] own house again,” said Max Nielsen (’27), a brother of the host-house fraternity.
“I am excited to have a chance to celebrate Halloween as a community and to have a chance to build Greek unity across campus. This week is also a great way for our newest members to connect with all of the members of Alma College FSL as we work together to put on a great Greek week,” said Sofia Floros (’26).
