On March 8, 2024, France etched a new chapter in its history by becoming the first country to enshrine the right to abortion as a constitutional right. This significant milestone was celebrated on International Women’s Day with the iconic Eiffel Tower illuminating the message “My Body, My Choice.”

France’s declaration of the Right to Abortion as a constitutional amendment symbolized a profound recognition of women’s autonomy over their bodies.

The French Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, acknowledged a “moral debt” to women who suffered through illegal abortions in the past, underscoring the gravity and importance of this legislative change. The overwhelming support shown in the votes held in Versailles in the 780 to 70 ratio further emphasizes the widespread recognition of this amendment as a tribute to women’s rights and a step towards greater gender equality in France.

“As a citizen of Greece, I believe the decision by France to give women the constitutional right to abortion is a historical moment for all of the European Union [(EU)] and the world,” said Filippos Mourikis (‘25), an international student from Greece majoring in Political Science.

Although many see this as a step towards reproductive freedom, there exists a segment of the population that views this amendment as ethically contentious.

The Catholic Church, in particular, has taken a firm stance against abortion, emphasizing the sanctity of life and the belief that universal human rights do not extend to the right to take a life.

Another factor that influences the public opinion is the anti-abortion laws in Malta and Poland, where the EU member Malta backed out of a bill in 2022 to terminate pregnancies if the mother’s life is at high risk.

“I believe it’s a controversial moment, but women should have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies,” said Mourikis.

Yet, this debate encapsulates the essence of democracy: the ability to engage in dialogue, to challenge prevailing norms and to enact laws that reflect the collective values and aspirations of society. France’s bold decision to affirm the right to abortion as a constitutional amendment exemplifies the power of democracy to empower certain groups of individuals.

Furthermore, it can be predicted that France’s bold move is likely to reverberate across the globe, inspiring other nations to reconsider their stance on abortion laws. The decision portrays the idea that reproductive rights are fundamental human rights and should be protected and upheld by governments worldwide.

Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that the debate surrounding abortion is deeply complex and multifaceted, and individuals may hold differing beliefs and values on this issue. While France’s legalization of abortion represents a significant victory for reproductive rights advocates, it also sparks ongoing dialogue and debate about the ethical, moral and societal implications of abortion laws.
